This tip is important because a tone isn't "conversational" because the language is casual, it's because the content feels like a one-on-one conversation.
The Story Spine (by Kenn Adams):
Act 1 - A world and its hero's routine are established - Who the hero is:
1) Once upon a time ...
2) Every day ...
3) Until one day ... (The hero's routine is broken)
Act 2 - The cost for breaking the routine - What the hero does:
4) Because of that ...
5) Because of that ...
6) Because of that ...
Act 3 - The hero succeeds or fails - How the hero lands:
7) Until finally ...
8) Ever since then ... (A new routine is established)
Act 1:
1) Once Upon a time
2) Every day
3) Until One Day
Act 2:
4) Because of that
5) Because of that - midpoint:
Outline the entire story, but start telling the story here. A midpoint is often where the hero is at their lowest, and begins to reverse their fortunes. The tricky part is using what precedes the midpoint as subtext for what follows, so the story has a compelling opening and is fast, but is also logical.
6) Because of that
Act 3:
7) Until finally
8) Ever since then
